Foxconn chairman looks at LeEco ecosystem for possible cooperation
Foxconn Electronics chairman Terry Gou and a number of top executives of the EMS giant have recently visited an experience shop of the "LeEco ecosystem" operated by China-based conglomerate LeEco (formerly LeTV) in Shenzhen to tap the possibility of enhancing cooperation between the two companies, according to LeEco chairman and CEO Jia Yueting.
LeEco is currently promoting its business model, namely LeEco ecosystem, that pushes sales of smartphones, TVs, mountain bikes, TV shows, movies, content and may also include self-driving electric cars later, by bundling memberships with platforms, content and hardware devices.
During a recently concluded promotional campaign from May 24 to June 20, LeEco, which is also known for being the "Netflix of China," garnered a total of CNY4.05 billion (US$615.08 million) in membership income, according to the company. Subscribers receive hardware products such as TVs, smartphones, or other hardware equivalent to the membership fees they paid. The results were higher than the company's target of CNY3 billion.
Foxconn, which has been trying to transform itself from a pure EMS provider into a more trade-oriented business, may be interested in LeEco's business model, indicated industry sources. Foxconn currently is a hardware partner for LeEco.
